Timber framing is a storied and historical craft that has been in practice for thousands of years.  Simultaneously relying on the natural strength of trees and the precision of hand crafted joinery, timber framing is a collaboration of the best of human and nature.

The primary “joint” of a timber frame (tradionally post and beam) is the mortise and tenon, a hand carved “tongue” and a mortise “hole,” that interlocks two timbers and is secured with wooden pegs. Other joints include laps, scarfs, dovetails, and many more!

Why Timber Framing? Beyond the undeniable aesthetic beauty of exposed timbers and hand cut joinery in your living space, timber framing offers a number of practicle benifits as well. The incredible stregth of a timber frame allows it to remain structural without the need of many interior walls as with conventional construction, and so allows wide open spans perfect for great rooms, kitchens and cathedral ceilings. With modern building envelopes suchs as SIPS (structural insulated panels), timber frames provide an ideal structure that can be insulated without thermal bridging, improving energy efficiency and lowering energy costs!

At BFDB we honor the tradition of the craft, and the strong, elegant forms of timber framing, while striving for ingenuity and modernity in our work.  What is delivered is a beautiful, timeless product that will last for generations.
